This school for a small municipality in Mongolia required careful study of the harsh climate and surrounding vegetation. Our design inspired by the traditional yurt buildings and local materials, nestles the school within berms on the north facing elevation thus providing protection from the cold harsh winds in the winter.

Our objective was to design a building which could act as a microcosm of ‘community’, which we think is lacking in all major cities in our world. We find this detrimental to the well being of our human population worldwide.

The Leiden Pearls 071





In 2019 a competition was launched in Leiden initiating the creative design of forgotten or unused portions of existing buildings or partially underused sites. Our project created a side extension to an existing council housing block, housing new starter studios, on 5 floors.

As Mexico has natural pine our proposal uses only treated pinewood as the building block elements. Pine is a durable, renewable building material which when used in sections of 200mm is also insulating. This does away with the necessity of providing an additional insulating material. The blocks were designed to interlock, are colour coded for ease of assembly, and can be delivered to the emergency location ready for fitting together.
